How to Get the Most Out of Fretboard
Fretboard is a flexible CAGED practice tool. Use favorites to build your own workout — triads only, one scale across all positions, two pentatonics across the neck, or any mix that fits your practice.
Start with a simple workout
Fretboard works best when you pick a small set of sounds and stay with them long enough to see how they connect across the neck. The Favorites tab is your custom workout: add the scales or arpeggios you want to study, reorder them, and use Practice to cycle through them.
Example 1: One key across all 5 CAGED positions
Pick one sound, set the root, and move through each CAGED position. This is a great way to connect the neck visually instead of treating each shape as a separate pattern.
Try this with Major or Major Pentatonic first. Browse the shape, favorite it, then use Practice to keep the key fixed while you move through the queue.
Example 2: Triads only
Want a more harmony-focused session? Favorite a triad arpeggio by itself and practice it in different keys and positions. This keeps the material lean and makes it easier to hear chord tones clearly.
Example 3: One pentatonic across the neck
If you want a familiar guitar-first session, use one pentatonic and follow it through the neck. Once that feels solid, add a second scale or an arpeggio to compare how the shapes overlap.
Practice tips
- Keep the set small. Two or three items are enough for a strong session.
- Stay in one key long enough to recognize intervals and landmarks.
- Reorder favorites to match the study path you want.
- Use browse for discovery and Practice for repetition.
